Jumu’ah Khutbah: Arise and Rejoice at the Advent of the Month of the Birth of the Prophet of Mercy & Love
3rd Rabi-al-Awwal 1446AH

Assalamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh!
All praise is due to Allah the Lord of the worlds such praise that is bountiful, pure and blessed. Your Lord filled the heavens with whatever He wished (of creatures, both seen and unseen).
I bear witness that there is no god except Allah who has no partner (of any sort to assist in the administration of the universe). I also bear witness that Muhammad is Allah’s servant and messenger who was specially chosen, the friend of Allah, the bearer of glad tidings (conveying the news of Jannah and the goodness contained therein which no eye has ever seen nor any heart ever thought of) and the warner (of the grave consequences that await the disbelievers and evil doers in Hellfire), the guide (to the right path that earns the traveler the acceptance and good pleasure of Allah), the best of prophets in rank (for he was the first of them in creation and the one who completed the message of Allah and also the one that all other Prophets were made to take a pledge of loyalty), the best of prophets in speech (he make short speeches and they come with multitude of meanings and benefits), the completion and seal of prophethood (after whom no other prophet will come from Allah to the humankind), the remover of burden and shackles (through the special grace that came with him from Allah), the caller to good speech and the best of actions and conditions, the one Allah the Almighty sent with guidance and the true religion, near the end of time as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, and a caller to Allah and the right path. Truly he was used to conclude the message (of Allah to all creations), and he (successfully) taught and brought them out of ignorance (of jahiliyya into the light of Islam), and guided with the creation from misguidance. (With the guidance that he came with), he (SAW) opened the horizons of the world for the deaf ears and sealed hearts. He left behind (upon conclusion of his message) an immaculate document whose night is like its day and none deviates from it except one who perishes.
That is Rasulullah (SAW)! He has no equal in all of creation; he stands unique in his nature, character and leadership. He was a man but not a man like us. He is liked by those whom Allah has blessed and those destined for destruction hate and chastise him. This is Rabi’ul Awwal, the month in which the blessed Rasul was born. O Allah! Bless this Unletter and Gracious Prophet, his family and companions, the followers and their followers with goodness until the Day of Judgment, and grant us same goodness with them, O Lord of the worlds.
O Allah! As we have believed in him without seeing him, do not separate us from him until you put us in his blessed group alongside those whom you have shown your favour among the Ambiyaa (prophets – those who received divine revelation), Siddeeqeen (those who testify immediately to the truth and kept to it), Shuhadaa (martyrs – those prepared to die for Allah and for Rasulullaah, SAW) and Saaliheen (the righteous ones who purify their bodies and souls) on whom Allah has bestowed His bounties. These are, indeed the best of companions.
O servants of Allah! Know that the best of speech is the Book of Allah (al-Qur’an al-Kareem) and the best of guidance is the one provided (by Allah) through Sayyidina Muhammad (SAW). And beware that the worst of all matters that are evil are the newly introduced. Every new things leads to innovation (in religion) and every innovation is deviation and every deviation leads to the Hellfire.
O servants of Allah! Fear Allah and obey His Messenger whom He sent to teach good manners and create happiness for humanity and to restore them to position of dignity after they had lost it. Submit yourself to Allah (SWT), our Lord and Creator, who is The Most Loving and The Most Merciful. Our faith should be guided by His divine attributes such as Ar-Raheem (the Most Merciful) and Al-Wadud (the Most Loving) among His other beautiful names. It is imperative to understand that mercy and love are intertwined and Allah has gracefully beautified His Prophet with these two attributes of Himself.
With the advent of the lunar month of Rabīʻ al-Awwal, the Muslim world celebrates a very remarkable occasion that brings festivities to every Muslim household; it is the birth of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). For Muslims, this very special occasion summons up the value of Mercy which is lamentably absent in many facets of our life today. Be reminded that Allah (SWT) said concerning His Rasul (SAW):وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَـٰكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَـٰلَمِينَ “We have sent you (O Muhammad – SAW) as a mercy to the universe” (Q21:107) with the mercy being for the whole ‘universe’ encompassing all of mankind, Jinn and other creation at large by guiding them to the path of salvation.
The Prophet (SAW) confirmed what Allah said above, concerning him being mercy when he (SAW) said: “O people, verily I am only a gifted mercy” (Al-Tabarani in Al-Mu’jam Al-Awsat, 3:223 Hadith #2981 and others). This mercy evidently dominated every aspect of his life (PBUH) and was witnessed by all. The Prophet (SAW) was specifically given a gentle disposition (layyin al-janib) towards humanity. He treated people with compassion and care even though they often treated him with cruelty, harshness, and disobedience. Even when his people rejected him, his mercy prevailed.
The mercy of the Prophet (SAW) was so comprehensive and all- inclusive that it encompassed animals and birds, and the Sunnah (Prophetic traditions) recorded many occasions where this mercy reached its peak. A woman was reportedly promised the hellfire because of her merciless behavior with a cat (a pet animal) and a man had his sins forgiven because he quenched the thirst of a dog wandering in the desert in ahadith reported by Al-Bukhāri and Muslim to teach mankind of the need to show mercy to not just fellow humans but to all other animate creation.
O servants of Allah! Celebration of Mawlid Nabiyy should be all about learning about the quality of life that the Prophet (SAW) brought to humanity and explaining ways of actualizing them for Allah (SWT) said: لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًا
“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and (who) remembers Allah often.” (Q33:21)
If the desire of the Muslim is to meet Allah, then he must remember Him (SWT) all the time but he can only achieve this objective when he aligns with the ways of Rasulullah whom Allah sent to us as a man from among us, who lived with us and showed us the path of attaining eternal love and mercy. The Prophet (SAW) did not only teach us how to love our Creator but also how to love other creations. He is the light that brightens the darkness, the epitome of mercy, the paragon of virtues and that is why Allah has recommended him as the one to obey and follow so that we can achieve our objective of meeting Him (SWT).
O servants of Allah! Know that as the embodiment of the Quranic values, our beloved Prophet (SAW) had shown the ideal virtues such as, in many instances, how to rise above hate and enmity. He emphasised that forgiveness is greater than revenge, perseverance is larger than retaliation and love is better than hate. These are qualities that we all should strive for in the struggle to make better our Islam. We shall look at these matters consequently.
1. Forgiveness Over Revenge – The Prophet’s travail at Ta’if when he was treated badly following his call upon the people to Islam is a lesson that we all need to take very seriously. Rejected and physically hurt, the Prophet (SAW) confided in Allah and recited the following supplication,
“O Allah! I complain to You of my weakness, my scarcity of resources, and the humiliation I have been subjected to by the people. O Most Merciful of those who are merciful. O Lord of the weak and my Lord too. To whom have you entrusted me? To a distant person who receives me with hostility? Or to an enemy to whom you have granted authority over my affair? So long as You are not angry with me, I do not care. Your favour is of a more expansive relief to me. I seek refuge in the light of Your Face by which all darkness is dispelled and every affair of this world and the next is set right, lest Your anger or Your displeasure descends upon me. I desire Your pleasure and satisfaction until You are pleased. There is no power and no might except by You.” (Al-Mu’jam Al-Kabir by Imam At-Tabrani)
Nana A’ishah (RA) reported the event thus:
I asked the Prophet ﷺ “Have you ever experienced a day harder than the day of the battle of Uhud?” He replied, “Indeed, I experienced them (dangers) at the hands of your people (i.e., the disbelievers from amongst the Quraish tribe). The hardest treatment I met from them was on the Day of ‘Aqabah when I went to Ibn ‘Abd Yalil bin ‘Abd Kulal (who was one of the chiefs of Ta’if) with the purpose of inviting him to Islam, but he made no response (to my call). So I departed with deep distress. I did not recover until I arrived at Qarn ath-Tha’alib. There, I raised my head and saw a cloud which had cast its shadow on me. I saw in it Jibril (Gabriel) ﷺ who called me and said: ‘Indeed, Allah, the Exalted, heard what your people said to you and the response they made to you. And He has sent you the angel in charge of the mountains to order him to do to them what you wish’. Then the angel of the mountains called me, greeted me and said: ‘O Muhammad, Allah listened to what your people had said to you. I am the angel of the mountains, and my Rabb has sent me to you so that you may give me your orders. (I will carry out your orders). If you wish I will bring together the two mountains that stand opposite to each other at the extremities of Makkah to crush them in between”‘. But Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I rather hope that Allah will raise from among their descendants, people who will worship Allah the One, and will not ascribe partners to Him (in worship)” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
He did not respond with rage and retaliation. Instead, he prayed for those who had insulted and hurt him. He rose above hate and enmity. His heart was full of hope and mercy. Today, Ta’if is a beautiful town with its people professing the Islamic faith.
Similarly, in the aftermath of the Battle of Uhud, the Prophet (SAW) was narrated to have been severely injured. The Prophet (SAW) did not become resentful or held grudges with his adversaries. Instead, he prayed that they would be forgiven. Despite this hardship and personal injury, the Prophet’s response was to supplicate thus: رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِقَوْمِي فَإِنَّهُمْ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ “Oh Lord, forgive my people for they do not know.” (Sahih Muslim)
Rasulullah (SAW) also explained that this dua was invoked by the previous messengers and showed that indeed forgiveness is greater than revenge.
2. Seeing the Best in Others – The Prophet (SAW) also taught us that through love and mercy, one can be drawn to the beauty of Islam. The earlier days of Sayyidina Umar (RA) showed that he was a notable adversary of Rasulullah (SAW) that had challenged the Prophetic message prior to becoming a Muslim. Even then, the Prophet (SAW) prayed to Allah (SAW) to soften his heart. In a hadith by Ibn Umar (RA), Rasulullah (SAW) supplicated, ‏ “‏ اللَّهُمَّ أَعِزَّ الإِسْلاَمَ بِأَحَبِّ هَذَيْنِ الرَّجُلَيْنِ إِلَيْكَ بِأَبِي جَهْلٍ أَوْ بِعُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ ‏”‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ وَكَانَ أَحَبَّهُمَا إِلَيْهِ عُمَرُ ‏.‏ “Oh Allah, strengthen Islam with one of two men whom you love more: Abu Jahl or Umar ibn Al-Khattab.” (Sunan At-Tirmizi)
By the acceptance of this du’a, Sayyidina Umar (RA) eventually accepted Islam and we all know his contribution to Islam.
Clearly, through gestures of love and mercy, even the hardest hearts can be softened, just like how hard rocks can be yielded by the continuous flowing of water. At times, we may think that the harder we are, the better it is for us to fight against those who hate us. However, this was not what the Prophet (SAW) had demonstrated. He showed that love trumps hate. Hate should be challenged with love and mercy, not enmity and violence.
3. Love for Fellow Humankind – The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) taught us to love one another. Saying and emphasising that what we love for ourselves should also be what we love for others. In a hadith, Rasulullah (SAW) reminded us of this golden rule, “None of you has faith until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself” (Sahih Al-Bukhari).
It is important to know that the ‘brother’ used in the above hadith is not limited to just fellow Muslims, but can be extended to all of humanity as well, commonly referred to as Al-Ukhuwwah Al-Insaniyah (brotherhood in humanity). Hence, we must ensure that what we like for ourselves, we also do it for others. What we do not like for ourselves, we do not do it to others.
This amiable and esteemed Prophet (SAW) instructed us to look after one another and love the poor and needy. In a hadith, he (SAW) reminded his wife A’ishah (RA): O A’ishah! Love the poor and be close to them, for Allah (SWT) will bring you near Him on the Day of Resurrection (on account of this)” (Sunan At-Tirmizi). Is there any time ever that this hadith need to be put to practice?
The Prophet (SAW). taught mankind that a society that loves one another and takes care of each other is a society that is strong and cohesive. He demonstrated this philosophy in Madeenah after the Hijrah and the result was huge success. What would have, otherwise been a humanitarian challenge of destitution was avoided and everyone was blessed for it. Contrary to his teaching, the world now operates as silos without the communality and share of love and mercy needed for success and progress. The rich have run away with their wealth and the poor are daily cursing he rich and the end result is chaos and destitution.
4. Love for Other Creations – Beyond doing good to one another, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) also showed how we should treat other living creatures with love and mercy. He warned against harming the animals. In a hadith, Rasulullah (SAW) said, “A woman was punished because of a cat which she kept locked up until it died, and she entered Hell because of it, because she did not feed it or give it water when she kept it locked up, neither did she let it eat from the vermin of the earth” (Bukhari & Muslim).
The Prophet (SAW) was known to be always gentle with other creations. Even though we regard some animals as impure, Muslims are expected to respect and handle them with love and mercy. For instance, in dealing with dogs, the Prophet (SAW) did not teach us to hate them. In fact, the Prophet (SAW) told us about the merits of feeding dogs. In a hadith, it was shared that,
“A man felt very thirsty while he was on the way, he came across a well. He went down the well, quenched his thirst and came out. Meanwhile, he saw a dog panting and licking mud because of excessive thirst. He said to himself, “This dog is suffering from thirst as I did.” So, he went down the well again and filled his shoe with water and watered it. Allah thanked him for that deed and forgave him. The people said, “Oh Rasulullah! Is there a reward for us in serving the animals?” He replied: “Yes, there is a reward for serving any animate (living being).” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
O servants of Allah! From the teaching of this great Prophet, we have a collective duty towards our environment. Rasulullah (SAW) encouraged us to plant trees as it would benefit other creations. Through a narrated hadith, he (SAW) said: “No Muslim who plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person or an animal eats from it, except that this is regarded as charity” (Bukhari).
Today, with the threats of climate change and global warming, there is a need for us to treat our environment with love and respect. We should make efforts to prevent wastage, over-reliance on single-use plastic, and make efforts not to pollute our waters and the air. We need to inculcate our love towards the environment and make efforts to protect it from degradation and destruction.
Indeed, we need to bring back the teachings of love and mercy of Rasulullah (SAW) into our lives. In facing the challenges of today’s post-modern society, we need to spread the values of love and mercy. The amplification of hate today needs to be challenged by radiating love and mercy to humanity. We should seek to build bridges with others and not walls. We should manifest our faith through the prism of love and mercy.
May Allah (SWT) place us among those who will be granted the love of Rasulullah (SAW) and be among those who will spread his enduring love to humanity. May we be among those who spread love and not hate, spread peace and not conflict, spread unity and not division. Amin.

PART 2
All praises are due to Allah, Lord of all that exist where they exist. O Allah bestow Your Salutation and Peace upon the most eloquent of all Arabs whom Allah has given the most comprehensive words and upon everyone who follow his guidance, his examples and footsteps until the Day of Judgement.
O servants of Allah! Know that Messenger of Allah is specially distinguished in his physical and spiritual composition. The Messenger chosen by the Most Merciful to deliver the message of mercy set a great example in this regard. His life reflected this sublime value. In his sayings, actions and dealings, he reflected the highest level of mercy that a human being could ever reach. Some of the examples of his mercy are discussed thus.
1. Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: “I heard the Messenger of Allah (SAW) saying, ‘When Allah created the creatures, He wrote in a Book, which is with Him over [His] Throne: ‘Verily, My Mercy prevails over My Wrath”’ (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
2. Abu Hurairah also narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, “Allah has divided mercy into one hundred parts; and He retained with Him ninety-nine parts, and sent down to earth one part. Through this one part, creatures deal with one another with compassion, so much so that an animal lifts baby animal, lest it should trample on it.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
3. Jarir (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: “Allah does not show mercy to those who do not show mercy to people.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
4. `Abdullah ibn `Amr (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: “Those who show mercy will be shown mercy by the Merciful [Lord.] Show mercy to those on earth, and He Who is in the heavens will show mercy to you” (At-Tirmidhi).
5. Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari (RA) narrated that the Prophet (SAW) said: “You can never be (true) believers until you show mercy to one another.” The Companions said, “We all show mercy, O Messenger of Allah.” The Prophet replied, “It is not the compassion that any one of you shows to his friend. It is the compassion and mercy that you show the people in general [that I mean]” (At-Tirmidhi).
O servants of Allah! What we have stated above relate to the divine mercy to broadly guide us that Allah epitomizes mercy and it is available to all and sundry and He demands that we show mercy amongst ourselves. We have also seen that the quality of mercy is a sign of faith and its absence connotes otherwise. Another type of mercy shown and exemplified by Rasulullah was how to correct each other’s errors and mistakes.
Once a Bedouin entered the Prophet’s Mosque for the first time. He raised his voice in supplication, “O Allah, forgive me and Muhammad, but don’t forgive anyone else!” The Prophet smiled at him and remarked gently, “You are limiting something that is vast.” Later, the man urinated on the masjid floor. The Prophet calmed the upset onlookers, and told them to leave the man alone. He (SAW) reminded his companions that they were sent to make things easy on people, not difficult. The bedouin later recounted his experience with the Prophet (SAW):
‘May my mother and father be sacrificed for him. He did not scold or insult me. He just said, ‘We do not urinate in these mosques-they were built for prayer and remembrance of Allah.’ Then he called for a bucket of water to be poured on the ground. (Ibn Majah).
O servants of Allah! Rasulullah devoted a lot of time towards the care of the vulnerable people. Anas ibn Malik (RA) said: ‘I served the Prophet at home and on journeys. By Allah, he never said to me for anything which I did: Why have you done this like this? Or for anything which I did not do: Why have you not done this like this? (Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
As we celebrate Mawlid Nabiyy, let the rich use this month to alleviate the sufferings of the less privileged; let the leaders turn a new leaf in their system of governance to give the rights of the people they govern to them and fear the questioning of the Day of Judgement and let the poor also keep the trust of obedience demanded of them and stop destroying public properties. At this critical time in the history of our country where nothing good seem to be happening, let us support one another with good advice, prayers and sincerity in everything that we do. May Allah grant us His Utmost support to take us out of this quagmire.
