Jumu’ah Khutbah: Farewell to Hijra Year 1445 AH
29th Dhul-Hijjah 1445 AH

Assalamu alaykum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuh

All praise belongs to Allah Who created the heavens and the earth and Who made multitudes of darkness (evil) and a light (guidance) and yet, those who are bent on denying the truth regard other powers as equals with their Lord. He is the One Who created you (your father Aadam, AS) from clay and then fixed a term (after which you will die). The term (when you will be resurrected) is fixed with Him (in His knowledge), and yet you doubt (the possibility of resurrection). He is Allah (Who is The Only One deserving to be worshipped) in the heavens and on the earth. He knows your secrets and what you make known and He knows what you earn
I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger. May the peace and blessings of Allah (SWT) be upon the Messenger of Allah.
O Allah! Grant salawat, peace and blessing on our leader, Muhammad, and his household similar to Your Endless Perfection and the measure of his perfection with You.
O Servants of Allah! The Hijrah Year 1445 has few hours remaining to come to a close and 1446 will be ushered in. Is it not shocking how quickly years pass by these days? Anas ibn Malik (RA) reported the Messenger of Allah, SAW, said,”‏ لاَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَتَقَارَبَ الزَّمَانُ فَتَكُونُ السَّنَةُ كَالشَّهْرِ وَالشَّهْرُ كَالْجُمُعَةِ وَتَكُونُ الْجُمُعَةُ كَالْيَوْمِ وَيَكُونُ الْيَوْمُ كَالسَّاعَةِ وَتَكُونُ السَّاعَةُ كَالضَّرْمَةِ بِالنَّارِ ‏”‏ “The Hour will not be established until time passes rapidly, such that a year is like a month, a month is like a week, a week is like a day, a day is like an hour, and an hour is like the flicker of a flame” (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2332).
The quick passage of time is one of the signs which indicate that the Hour (end of time) is near. We should all take this as an opportunity to prepare ourselves for it by doing good deeds in our lives as we do not know when it will come. Allah has already given us enough warning as the situation is the aakhiriz-zaman (end of time) in Surah al-Asr.
By the oath of time! (the passage of time that overtakes everything material). Verily man is at a loss (in both worlds) except those who have Imaan, who do good deeds, who encourage (urge and counsel) each other towards (remaining steadfast on and propagate) the truth and who encourage each other to exercise Sabr (Q103:1-3).

O servants of Allah! Know that the Surah, Al-Asr (Time), quoted above, though very short, is so comprehensive that the renowned scholar Imam Shafi’i (RA) stated that if nothing but this Surah was revealed, it would have been sufficient for the guidance of man. It is instructive, therefore, to note that for Allah to swear by Time (which is night and day, in which people’s deeds take place), that every person is a loser (and loss is the opposite of success), a Muslim faithful should be on guard as his objective is to succeed.

It is imperative to know that loss is of various kinds – it may be absolute loss, as in the case of one who loses in both this world and the hereafter (i.e., one who misses out on bliss and deserves hellfire) or it be a loss in this world alone or the hereafter. But, whichever way, a Muslim must avoid a loss situation.

O brethren! Know that with the passage of time, difficulties and travails will increase and a state of loss comes upon mankind. The antidote for the loss is what Surah al-Asr provided:
1. Have Iman (Faith) – Have good thought about Allah and the servants of Allah. Allah requires that those who have Iman fit into this description: إِنَّمَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ ٱللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَإِذَا تُلِيَتْ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَـٰتُهُۥ زَادَتْهُمْ إِيمَـٰنًا وَعَلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُونَ “The Mu’mineen are those whose hearts tremble (out of respect) when Allah is mentioned, whose (strength of) Iman increases when His Aayaat (signs) are recited to them and (as a result, they are those) who trust only in their Rabb (and listen to obey) (Q8:2). With this frame of mind, the mu’min willingly obeys Allah and avoids all prohibitions.
2. Engage in Good Deeds – Good deeds done purely for the sake of Allah is the output of sincere faith; it is the twin of faith. We see everywhere in the Qur’an the pair of Iman (faith) and Amal (deed or work); so, one cannot have faith and refuse to carry out the works that are symbols of the faith like praying, fasting, etc. The description of the believer by Allah continues (Q8:3) as those who: ٱلَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَـٰهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ “They (the Mu’mineen) are those who establish salaah (perform it with all its etiquette) and who spend (for His pleasure) from what We have provided for them.
3. Propagate Virtue & Good Deeds – The whole essence of the Islamic creed is to perfect moral and spread felicity through righteousness. It is not sufficient that you are individually good and compliant, we have joint responsibility to ensure that righteousness thrives in our society. This task is critical to maintain sanity and good behaviour in the society most especially in these days in which truth is mixed with falsehood, standards have been changed, history has been falsified, the voices of the vile have risen, the voices of the virtuous have been silenced. And only the narratives of the powers that be are considered correct. But Islam taught us to know that falsehood is temporary, while the truth lasts until the Hour. As Allah Almighty says: وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَآءُ بَعْضٍ يَأْمُرُونَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَيُطِيعُونَ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥٓ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ سَيَرْحَمُهُمُ ٱللَّهُ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٌ “The Mu’mineen men and the Mu’mineen women are supporters (helpers, protectors) of each other. They command (others and each other to do) good, prevent evil, establish salaah, pay zakaah and obey Allah and His Rasool (SAW). These are the ones on whom Allah shall soon shower mercy. Verily Allah is Mighty, The Wise (Q9:71).

It was narrated that ‘Aishah (RA) said: “I heard the Rasulullah ﷺ say: ‘enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, before you call and you are not answered” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4004).
________________________________________
4. Cultivate Patience – The necessity to exercise patience is a command of Allah that appeared in several parts of the Qur’an. Scholars report that there are over 99 instructions urging the believer to be patient in the Qur’an. Allah says: يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱصْبِرُوا۟ وَصَابِرُوا۟ ‘O you who believe! Endure and be more patient (than your enemy) …’ (Q2:200). Sabr is an attribute of Allah which we have been ordered to copy so that we can get trained to remain steadfast in our Ibaadah and refrain from sins.

O servants of Allah! Know that at the heart of the above requirements is Taqwa (fear and consciousness of Allah) as Allah said: وَمَن يَتَّقِ ٱللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُۥ مَخْرَجًا “whosoever fears Allah and keep his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty) وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا يَحْتَسِبُ وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُۥٓ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَـٰلِغُ أَمْرِهِۦ قَدْ جَعَلَ ٱللَّهُ لِكُلِّ . شَىْءٍ قَدْرًا “And He will provide for him from (sources) he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him” (Q65:2-3).

This is the established path that can create ease which Allah promised the believer. Just keep to your side of the bargain with Allah (i.e., obey and worship Him as demanded, put your trust totally in Him) and you will find Him fulfilling His promise to you as He said: فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا “There is certainly ease (in this world and certainly in the Aakhirah) after every difficulty (of this world). إِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا Without doubt, there is ease after every difficulty” (Q94:5-6).

O servants of Allah! Fear Allah and remain steadfast in servitude to Him. Times are hard and complaints fill the air. Your Lord has made life this way; some time you have in abundance and other times you lack but you must appreciate that:
وَمَا بِكُم مِّن نِّعْمَةٍ فَمِنَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ إِذَا مَسَّكُمُ ٱلضُّرُّ فَإِلَيْهِ تَجْـَٔرُونَ “Every bounty that you possess is from Allah. Thereafter, (after realizing this) when any difficulty afflicts you, you must appeal only to Him (to assist you)” (Q16:53).

“There are two traits, whoever has them in him, Allah writes him down as grateful and patient. And whoever does not have them, Allah does not write him down as grateful, nor patient. Whoever looks to one above him for his religion, and follows him in it, and whoever looks to one who is below him in worldly matters, and praises Allah for the blessings He has favored the one who is above him with, then Allah writes him down as grateful and patient. And whoever looks to one who is below him for his religion, and looks to one who is above him for worldly matters, and grieves over what missed him of it, Allah does not write him down as grateful nor as patient” (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2512)

Dear beloved brethren! The two issues raised in this hadith are critical for our success in this world and in the hereafter. In it, we are guided thus:
1. In our religious affairs – look at others who are better than you and follow in their footsteps, and
2. In our worldly affairs – look at those who are poorer than you so that you can appreciate the grace and blessings of Allah and praise Him as appropriate.
And remember that Allah warned us: وَلَا تَتَمَنَّوْا۟ مَا فَضَّلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهِۦ بَعْضَكُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ لِّلرِّجَالِ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا
ٱكْتَسَبُوا۟ وَلِلنِّسَآءِ نَصِيبٌ مِّمَّا ٱكْتَسَبْنَ وَسْـَٔلُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مِن فَضْلِهِۦٓ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيمًا “Do not desire those things (religious or worldly virtues and status over which you have no control) with which Allah has favoured some of you above others (so as not to create jealousy and hatred between yourselves). For men shall be a portion (reward) of that which they earn (for the acts they carry out) and for women shall be a portion of that which they earn. Ask Allah for his favours (for your needs because He knows the status of each person and what each one deserves). Indeed, Allah is the Knower of all things (Q4:32).

Anas bin Malik (RA) reported the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: “Verily, Allah has servants for whom there will be pulpits on the Day of Resurrection for them to sit on. They are people whose clothes are radiant and whose faces are radiant. Though they were not prophets or martyrs, the prophets and martyrs wanted to be like them”. The Companions asked: “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?”. He replied: “They are those who love one another in the cause of Allah, those who visit one another in the cause of Allah, and those who associate with one another in the cause of Allah” (at-Tabrani in Al-Awsat).

Abdullah bin Masood (RA) said: إنَّ المُؤْمِنَ يَرَى ذُنُوبَهُ كَأنَّهُ قاعِدٌ تَحْتَ جَبَلٍ يَخافُ أنْ يَقَعَ عليه، وإنَّ الفاجِرَ يَرَى ذُنُوبَهُ كَذُبابٍ مَرَّ علَى أنْفِهِ فقالَ به هَكَذا، ثم ذكر حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم “The believer views his sins as if he was seated under a mountain fearing that it would fall upon him. And the wicked sees his sins like a fly that passes by his nose and he drives it away like this. Then he mentioned the hadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
ألَلَّهُ أفْرَحُ بتَوْبَةِ عَبْدِهِ مِن رَجُلٍ نَزَلَ مَنْزِلًا وبِهِ مَهْلَكَةٌ، ومعهُ راحِلَتُهُ، عليها طَعامُهُ وشَرابُهُ، فَوَضَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَنامَ نَوْمَةً، فاسْتَيْقَظَ وقدْ ذَهَبَتْ راحِلَتُهُ، حتَّى إذا اشْتَدَّ عليه الحَرُّ والعَطَشُ أوْ ما شاءَ اللَّهُ، قالَ: أرْجِعُ إلى مَكانِي، فَرَجَعَ فَنامَ نَوْمَةً، ثُمَّ رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ، فإذا راحِلَتُهُ عِنْدَهُ “Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than a man who camps at a place of doom, and he has his riding animal carrying his food and water. He then rests his head and sleeps for a bit then wakes to find his riding animal gone. (He starts looking for it) and suffers from severe heat and thirst or what Allah willed (him to suffer from). He then says, ‘I will go back to my place.’ He returns and sleeps, and then (getting up) he raises his head to find his riding animal beside him” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6308).
O beloved servants of Allah! Turn to Allah and attach yourselves fully to Him during your days of ease and your days of adversities and remember what Allah says: وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ رَضُوا مَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ سَيُؤْتِينَا اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ وَرَسُولُهُ إِنَّا إِلَى اللَّهِ رَاغِبُونَ “If only they were pleased with what Allah and His Rasool (SAW) gave them and said, “Allah is enough for us. Soon Allah shall grant us from His grace and His Rasool (SAW) will (grant us) as well (from other sources). We are certainly optimistic (hopeful) about Allah” (Q9:59).

PART 2
All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.

O servants of Allah! Know that one of the losses in the passage of time, is the reduction in our lifespan. So, do not waste time as it is a precious creation which is travelling in the manner prescribed for it in order that other creatures of Adamic nature will utilize it to attain closeness (qurb) to Allah through worship (ubudiyyah) and submission (Islam). The Prophet’s (SAW) advice to us which we must remember all of the times is to: “Take advantage of five things before five things befall you. Take advantage of your youth before you grow old, your health before you get ill, your wealth before you become poor, your free time before you become busy, and your life (while still alive) before you die”.

O servants of Allah! Our New Year will commence tomorrow or on Sunday depending on moon sighting. However, the events of the Muslim new year are diametrically opposite to the Christian or other faith new years. Ours is similar to the celebrations of National Independence Days by countries around the world.
Independence celebration is about gaining freedom from an external power that hinders you from taking charge of your lives and the activities surrounding
you. In the same vein, the new year rekindles the events of the Hijrah to Madinatu Tayyibah by the Prophet (SAW) and the Sahabah.

Our New Year is historical, being a day when a slave gains freedom; the day that the persecuted Muslim of Makkah entered Madinah; and the day that the Great Prophet (SAW) arrived in Madinah to establish dawlah al-islami (Islamic Government).

The hijrah emancipated the fledgling Muslim population from oppression and gave it freedom to serve Allah without hindrance. The resultant effect is the blossoming of Islamic brotherhood, establishment of an Islamic government under the leadership of Allah’s chosen Prophet and governance structure. The establishment of a standing army and political, social and economic structure were facilitated following the Hijrah to Madinah.

The beginning of the Islamic New Year is not celebrated like the Christians and other people celebrate their new year. It is not an eid like fitr or adha. No vigil is required of Muslims to usher in the new year, no party and no formal gathering for prayer has been established. However, it is very significant in the life of a Muslim as it presents him with an opportunity for introspection and stock taking. Ibn Abbas (RA) reported the Prophet (SAW) saying that “whoever fast the last day of Dhul-Hijjah and the first day of Muharram, he has indeed ended the outgoing year with fast and opened the coming year with fast and Allah shall grant him forgiveness of fifty years” (Nisa’i, Ahmad, Baihaqi’).

On this day, the Muslims in Madinah had joy in that the Great Prophet (SAW) was in their midst providing exemplary and selfless leadership which translated into peace, harmony and progress making the worship of Allah in the Islamic mode a natural choice. Allah gave credence to this when He (SWT) confirmed that: لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرًا “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad, SAW) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes for (the meeting with) Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much” (Q33:21).

O servants of Allah! Nigeria and, indeed, several countries are witnessing a lot of hardship ranging from economic downturn, political turmoil, banditry and war. The natural calamities have also become prevalent because, as Allah says: ظَهَرَ ٱلْفَسَادُ فِى ٱلْبَرِّ وَٱلْبَحْرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِى ٱلنَّاسِ لِيُذِيقَهُم بَعْضَ ٱلَّذِى عَمِلُوا۟ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ “Corruption has appeared on land and on sea (all place of human habitation) because of what people’s hands have perpetrated (through acts of disobedience) that He may make them taste something of what they have done (as punishment) that perhaps they may repent” (Q30:41). It is time for our leaders and their advisers to wake up to the reality that outsiders cannot be trusted to rescue us out of the present quagmire; the solution has to come from within.

Curiously, the people of Nigeria have endured the hard decisions that the new leadership of the country have had to take. We implore the new leadership to be honest with its people and do their best to rescue our ship from sinking. We pray that Allah will assist our leaders to do the right things needed to take us out of the doldrums.

O servants of Allah! Difficult times, like the one we are all confronted with now, are a test of our resilience and sincerity of Iman. At this point in time, let the true value of Islamic brotherhood manifest; let those who have be kind and generous to those without, let the employers pay wages that are reasonable and promptly without putting the employee to suffering, let those who sell be compassionate and not hoard essential commodities to create artificial scarcity and hike price, let us all play our roles towards alleviating the suffering of the common man.

Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace (Q33:56). So, we entreat Allah for salawaat on our beloved Rasool and other messengers thus:
اَللّهُمَ صَلِّ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمّدٍ عَبدِكَ ونَبِيِّكَ ورَسُولِكَ الْنَبِىّ الْأُمِّىّ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَسَلِّمْ تَسلِيمَاً. بِقَدرِ عَظَمَةِ ذَاتِكَ فِى كُلِّ وَقتٍ وَحِين O Allah, please send prayers upon Sayyidina Muhammad, Your Servant and Your Prophet and Your Messenger, the Unlettered Prophet, and send peace and greetings as plenty as Your Greatness, in all times and moments.
O Allah! Bestow blessings on Sayyidina Muhammad, Sayyidina Adam, Sayyidina Nuh, Sayyidina Ibrahim, Sayyidina Musa and Sayyidina `Isa and all the other Prophets and Messengers who came in between. Allah’s Blessings and His Salutations be upon them all.
O Allah, guide us with those whom You have guided, grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, be an ally to us along with those whom You are an ally to, and bless what You have bestowed upon us, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted.
Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
Remember Allah, the Great – He will remember you. Thank Him for His favors – He will increase you therein. And seek forgiveness from Him – He will forgive you. And be conscious of Him – He will provide you a way out of difficult matters. And, establish the prayer.
Wishing ourselves taqwa-filled, peaceful and prosperous 1446AH.
