Jumu’ah Khutbah: Cultivate Sabr
15th Dhul-Hijjah 1445AH
Assalamu alaykum warahmatullah wabarakaatuh!
﷽
All praise is due to Allah, the All-Sufficing. May the Salutation and Peace of Allah be upon His Messenger, the specially chosen.
I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah without partners and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
Sabr equates patience, steadfastness, equanimity, forbearance, etc. The concept of Sabr, which is often taken as synonymous to patience, is related to holding back one’s emotions from what encourages a person to make mistakes and evils which are considered wrong by the teachings of Islam. It is said that a person is patient, when he can refrain from being obedient in worship, practicing everything that Allah The Almighty commands and abstaining from doing everything that Allah The Almighty has forbidden. All of this is done sincerely for the sake of expecting the pleasure and great reward of Allah The Almighty (Mutaqin, 2022). In general, patience is aimed at humans and specifically the target is people who believe. Believers will always face challenges, distractions, trials and tribulations patiently, which require the sacrifice of their lives and possessions that are precious to them.
O servants of Allah! The necessity to exercise patience is a command of Allah that appeared in several parts of the Qur’an. Scholars report that there are over 99 instructions urging the believer to be patient in the Qur’an. Allah says:
O you who believe! Endure and be more patient (than your enemy) …’ (Q2:200).
Allah enjoins us to endure and be patient regarding whatever befalls us of trials. If Allah wills, there are days where we experience ease and, on some days, difficulty. And sometimes we get what we want, and sometimes we do not. It is a common feature of our life to encounter difficulties or unpleasant situations as in when we lose loved ones, when sickness comes upon us, when poverty hits us, etc. In all of these situations, a Muslim is required to place his trust in Allah for a way out of the seemingly bad situation. For this to happen, the Muslim must be patient.
In his admonition to his children, Sayyidina Luqman, al-Hakeem (the Wise) said:
يَـٰبُنَىَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأْمُرْ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ وَٱنْهَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنكَرِ وَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَصَابَكَ ۖ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنْ عَزْمِ ٱلْأُمُورِ “O my son! Aqim-As-Salat (establish As-Salat), enjoin (on people) Al-Ma‘ruf (Islamic Monotheism and all that is good), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief in the Oneness of Allah, polytheism of all kinds and all that is evil and bad), and bear with patience whatever befalls you. Verily, these are some of the important commandments (ordered by Allah with no exemption) (Q31:17).
It should be clear to us all that all that Allah has enjoined on the believer will be difficult to accomplish without patience. You need patience to perform your ibaadah, you need to refrain from evil and you need it to pass the tests which Allah will take through in the journey of life.
To emphasise the position of Sabr (patience) Allah also said: قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ ٱتَّقُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ۚ لِلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ فِى هَـٰذِهِ ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةٌۭ ۗ وَأَرْضُ ٱللَّهِ وَٰسِعَةٌ ۗ إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى ٱلصَّـٰبِرُونَ أَجْرَهُم بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍۢ “Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): O My slaves who believe (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism), be afraid of your Lord (Allah) and keep your duty to Him. Good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world, and Allah’s earth is spacious (so if you cannot worship Allah at a place, then go to another)! Only those who are patient shall receive their reward in full, without reckoning” (Q39:10).
Seek help in patience and As-Salat (the prayer). Truly! Allah is with As-Sabirun (the patient) [Q2:153] and that Indeed, ease accompanies hardship (Q94:5).
Speaking on the matter of Sabr, Rasulullah (SAW) was reported thus: عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ، وَأَبِي، هُرَيْرَةَ أَنَّهُمَا سَمِعَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ “ مَا يُصِيبُ الْمُؤْمِنَ مِنْ وَصَبٍ وَلاَ نَصَبٍ وَلاَ سَقَمٍ وَلاَ حَزَنٍ حَتَّى الْهَمِّ يُهَمُّهُ إِلاَّ كُفِّرَ بِهِ مِنْ سَيِّئَاتِهِ ” Abu Sa’id and Abu Huraira reported that they heard Allah’s Messenger (SAW) as saying: “Never a believer is stricken with discomfort, hardship or illness, grief or even with mental worry, except that his/her sins are forgiven” (Muslim: Hadith #6562).
Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri (RA): Some Ansari persons asked for (something) from Allah’s Messenger (SAW) and he gave them. They again asked him for (something) and he again gave them. And then they asked him and he gave them again till all that was with him finished. And then he said “If I had anything. I would not keep it away from you. (Remember) Whoever abstains from asking others, Allah will make him contented, and whoever tries to make himself self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient. And whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient. Nobody can be given a blessing better and greater than patience” (al-Bukhari: Hadith #1469).
O servants of Allah! The Qur’an is replete with stories of the trials and tribulations of the messengers of Allah and the equanimity and forbearance with which they all bear their hardships. We share with you the case of Sayyidina Ayyub in whose matter Allah Almighty says: وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَآ أَيُّوبَ إِذْ نَادَىٰ رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَسَّنِىَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنُ بِنُصْبٍ وَعَذَابٍ
‘And remember Our servant Ayyub, when he called upon his Lord: “Verily, I am troubled by the devil with labor and torment”’ (Q38:41). Despite the myriad of challenges faced by this Prophet of Allah, he took his case to Allah only with forbearance.
In a hadith Qudsi, the Prophet (SAW) was reported to have said: When a servant’s son dies, Allah says to the angels: “Have you taken the life of his son?”. The angels’ answer: “Yes, I have”. Allah asks again: “What did My servant say?” The angels replied: “He continued to praise You, give thanks and rest by saying: “innaa lillaahi wa inna ilaihi raaji’uun” (we belong to Allah and to Him we will return).” Then Allah says: “Build for My servant a house in Paradise, and call it Baitul Hamd (the house of praise)”. (Source: Zubdatul Waizin)
Wahab bin Munabbih reported: “I found in the Torah four consecutive lines:
1. “Whoever reads the Book of Allah and thinks that he will not be forgiven, then he is one of those who mock the verses of Allah”. This is instructive to every Muslim because the Qur’an reports Allah’s statement that: قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ “Say, “O My servants who have wronged their souls (by committing kufr or other sins)! Never lose hope of Allah’s mercy (so do not abstain from seeking forgiveness thinking that you will not be forgiven). Verily, Allah forgives all sins. Undoubtedly, He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.” (Q39:53).
2. “Whoever humbles himself to the rich because of his wealth has lost two-thirds of his religion.”
3. “Whoever grieves over something that has escaped him is annoyed at the decision (qada’a) of his Lord.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “… Seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don’t say: If only I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do and your ‘if’ opens the (gate) for Satan” (Sahih Muslim 2664).
4. “Whoever complains about the calamity that has befallen him to others, then in fact he is complaining against his Lord.” When Prophet Ya’qub (AS) lost his son, Yusuf (AS), he said: قَالَ إِنَّمَآ أَشْكُوا۟ بَثِّى وَحُزْنِىٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ “I complain of my sorrow and my grief only to Allah. I have been granted such knowledge from Allah that you do not know about.” (Q12:86). Here Ya’qub referred to his deep knowledge of Allah’s mercy, his knowledge of the dream that Yusuf saw as a child and perhaps some inspiration that Allah had given him. So, he did not take Allah to the court of humans. & 21:83)”.
The Prophet (SAW) said: “Verily, the greatest reward is with the greatest trial. And indeed, if Allah loves a servant, then He will try him, if the servant is patient, then Allah will choose him (ijtabbahu), and if the servant is willing then Allah will choose him (ishthafaahu) (more specifically)”.
It is narrated that one day, Prophet Musa (AS) was traveling with Yusha’u bin Nun. Suddenly a white bird came and landed on his shoulder and said: “O Prophet of Allah, protect me today from being killed”. Prophet Musa asked: “From whom?” “From the hunting bird, he wants to eat me”, replied the white bird with fear.
Then he entered into the sleeve of Prophet Moses’ shirt. Suddenly the hunting bird was in front of him and said: “O Prophet of Allah! Do not prevent me from my quarry!”.
Prophet Moses said: “I will slaughter for you one of my sheep”. The hunter bird replied: “Sheep meat is not suitable for me”. “Then eat the flesh of my thigh”, said the Prophet Moses. But the hunting bird did not want to, so he said: “I will only eat two of your eyes”.
So, the Prophet Moses was cast out, then the hunting bird landed on his chest, and struck both of his eyes with its beak. Then Yusha’u said: “O Prophet of Allah, do you not fear that yours are cast out just for the sake of (protecting) this bird?”.
Then the white bird came out of the Prophet Moses’ sleeve, then flew away while cornered by the hunting bird. Not long after the two came again. then one of the two introduced himself: “I am Gabriel”. The other said: “And I am Mikail. We are commanded by our Lord to test you against the Qada’a of your Lord, as to whether or not you are patient”. (Source: Zubdatul Waizin).
O servants of Allah! If Prophets are tested this hard way, why do you think, you should not be tested? As believers, it is certain that we will be tested. Allah asked: أَحَسِبَ ٱلنَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوٓا۟ أَن يَقُولُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُونَ ‘Do people think once they say, “We believe,” that they will be left without being put to the test?’ (Q29:1) and explained why He has to test us.
‘We certainly tested those before them. And ˹in this way˺ Allah will clearly distinguish between those who are truthful and those who are liars’ (Q29:2).
So as to know who is truthful amongst the believers, Allah tests us. A true believer will remain patient in times of difficulty, think good of his lord regardless, and wait for relief. Some are quick to find relief in other than Allah, some think they are being punished unjustly and some think they do not deserve to be in such situations. This is not the way and reasoning of true believers.
Abdullah Ibn Mubarak (RA) said: “There is only one calamity, but if the one who is afflicted regrets it, then the calamity becomes two. The first is the calamity itself, and the second is the loss of the reward of the calamity (if patience is exercised), even though the reward is greater than the calamity itself.”
O servants of Allah! The Prophet (SAW) has explained that: “There are three kinds of patience:
• patience with calamities –
• patience to do obedience, and
• patience not to commit disobedience.
Whoever has patience with calamity will have three hundred degrees written for him, the distance between each two degrees being like the distance between heaven and earth, and whoever has patience with obedience will have six hundred degrees written for him, the distance between two degrees being like the distance between the top of the earth and the end of the earth. And whoever patiently refrains from committing disobedience, nine hundred degrees will be written for him, the distance between two degrees being like the distance between the Throne and the earth”. (Source: Zubdatul Waizin)
O servants of Allah! Know that a servant has four options when faced with a trial. These are:
1. A person is angry and resentful – this is sinful. In this category are people who show displeasure either in their hearts, or upon their tongues or upon their limbs.
As for the displeasure in the heart, then it is that he shows his displeasure and even resentfulness to his Lord, or he feels that Allah has given him a loss, as if Allah had no right to take away what the servant had. He may even feel that Allah has oppressed him through this calamity. May Allah save us from this condition.
Showing displeasure on the tongue is that he calls out by saying ‘Woe to me! Ruin to me!’ and vulgar words of this nature. Or that he curses time, or he utters other forbidden statements, such as, ‘Why did this happen to me!’ We cannot question Allah in these matters (as if you are questioning His judgement). As an example, Narrated Anas: The Prophet ﷺ came upon a woman who was weeping for her child. He said to her: Fear Allah and have patience. She said: What have you to do with my calamity? She was then told that he was the Prophet ﷺ. She, therefore, came to him. She did not find doorkeepers at his gate. She said: I did not recognize you, Messenger of Allah. He said: Endurance is shown only at a first blow” (Sunan Abi Dawud 3124). It was narrated from Abu Umamah that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah says: ‘O son of Adam! If you are patient and seek reward at the moment of first shock, I will not approve of any reward for you less than Paradise” (Sunan Ibn Majah 1597).
Displeasure with the limbs involves slapping the cheeks, tearing the clothes, striking the head, etc., thus resulting in them being afflicted with two calamities: a calamity in their religion due to their discontentment and displeasure, and a calamity in their worldly life due to the original calamity that afflicted them.
2. A person chooses to be patient – he restrains and controls his soul. He dislikes the calamity, but he is patient and does not say anything on his tongue to displease Allah and he does not do anything with his limbs that would earn the anger of Allah and he does not think badly of Allah at all in his heart. He does not have any bad suspicions towards Allah. So, he is patient though he dislikes the unpleasantness of that which was decreed for him.
3. He is pleased – This person is a state of having pleasure with the calamity such that his chest is expanded and opened due to the calamity. He is in complete satisfaction – he is pleased with it with a pleasure that is complete, almost, if not as if he was not afflicted in the first place.
4. He is thankful – this is the highest level. The afflicted person thanks Allah for the calamity. When the Prophet (SAW) used to see something that caused him displeasure, he would say الحمد لله على كل حال – Alhamdu Lillahi ala kulli haalin – ‘All praise is for Allah in every condition’. Such a person is thankful to Allah because he knows that Allah will reward him as a result of that calamity.
O servants of Allah! You may be wondering how it is possible to thank Allah when visited with calamity. It is mentioned from one of the pious female worshippers that she was afflicted with something in her finger, so she praised Allah for allowing that affliction to occur. So, she was asked, ‘How are you praising Allah whilst you are being afflicted?’ She replied, ‘Indeed the sweetness of its reward gives me comfort from its agony, so I am patient with it.’
And, for this reason, it is imperative to know that the Prophet (SAW) said: “A moment’s patience with a misfortune is better than a year’s worship”. Hence it is said: “The one who is patient is better than the one who is grateful. Because the grateful person is only accompanied by an addition (which Allah gives because of his gratitude), as Allah Taaia says: لَئِن شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ “Indeed, if you give thanks, We will surely increase blessings to you” whereas the patient person is accompanied by Allah, Taala, as He says: إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الصَّابِرِينَ “Verily, Allah is with those who are patient”.
PART 2
All praise is to Allah, and peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no deity other than Allah and I bear witness that Mohammad is His slave and messenger.
O servants of Allah! Boast not that you good state of health is a sign of your being loved by Allah and consider not the poor state of health of a person as a sign of Allah’s displeasure with the person. It was narrated from Muhammad bin Maslamah, from the Prophet (SAW), that he said: “It is not good for a servant who never loses his wealth or gets sick. For indeed, if Allah loves a slave, He will try him, and if he is tried, then he is patient” (Source: Zubdatul Nasihin).
It was also narrated by Ibn Abid Dunya about patience and by Abu Shaykh about reward, as mentioned in al-Jami’us Saghir, from ‘Ali (RA) who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“There are three kinds of patience (meaning: there are three kinds of patience in terms of what is related to it): Patience with calamities (so that one does not get annoyed by them), patience with obedience (so that one does it), and patience with disobedience (so that one does not fall into it).
So, whoever is patient with calamities (i.e. with misfortunes until he can resist them with his good aspirations) Allah will record for him (i.e. ordain, or order to write in the Book of Allah and the records of deeds) three hundred degrees (i.e. a high position in Paradise), the distance between each two degrees is like the distance between heaven and earth. And whoever is patient in doing acts of obedience (i.e. to perform them and bear their heavy burdens), Allah will record for him six hundred degrees, the distance between each two degrees being the same as the distance between the highest limit of the earth to the end of the seventh layer of the earth. And whoever is patient in refraining from sinful acts (i.e. to forsake them), Allah will record for him nine hundred degrees, the distance between each two degrees being the same as the distance between the limit of the earth to the end of the Arsh (i.e. the highest level of being).
So, the patience to abstain from what is forbidden is the highest dignity, because it is difficult not to indulge in lust, or to lead it to what is not its nature. And next, patience to fulfill the commandments, because the commandments are mostly things that are favored by the good passions. Next, patience with the disliked things (calamities, disasters), because they can happen to anyone, good or bad, willing or unwilling.” (Source: At Taysir, Sharh Al Jami’us- Saghir).
Attabrani narrated from Ibn Abbas ra. said: The Messenger of Allah said:
“Whoever is afflicted with a calamity in his wealth or body, and he keeps it secret and does not complain about it to others, then Allah will surely forgive his (sin)”. (This is mentioned in Al Jami’us Saghir). So, one should not broadcast his problems as if those he is broadcasting to can avert it from him; rather, he should be patient and look up to Allah for the solution.
Imam Abul Laith as-Samarqand (RA) narrated in At Tanbeehil Ghafileen from Abdullah ibn Al Harith, from Ibn Abbas (RA), who said: “A prophet complained to his Lord, saying: “O Lord, the believing servant obeys You and abstains from sinful deeds, yet You keep the world away from him and You expose him to misfortunes. Whereas the disbelieving servant disobeys You and dares to commit sinful deeds, yet You keep the world away from him and You expose him to misfortunes”.
So, Allah Taala revealed to him: “Verily, all servants belong to Me, and all calamities belong to Me. Each one of them praises Me. The believing servant bears sins, so I take the world away from him and I expose him to calamities. So it is an atonement for his sins, so that he meets Me, then I repay him for his good deeds. But the one who disbelieves does good deeds, so I make provision for him and I keep him away from misfortunes, and I repay him for his good deeds in this world, so that he meets Me, and I repay him for his bad deeds”.
O servants of Allah! I urge you and myself to exercise Patience in Life’s Trials, Patience in Worship and Patience in Social Relationships. The Holy Prophet (SAW) said: “A believer does not maintain good relations with his brother unless he is patient with his brother’s bad traits” (Tirmidhi). With patience, we can maintain good relations that will propel us closer to Allah and attaining huge rewards.
Making supplications to A;llah at the time of hardship or calamity becomes critical for the believer. So, learn to supplication: إنّا لِلهِ َوإنَّا إلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ؛ اَللَّهُمَّ أجِرْنِيْ فِيْ مُصِيْبَتِيْ وَاخْلُفْلِيْ خَيْرًا مِنْهَا [Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un, Allahumma ajirni fi musibati wa akhlif li khairan minha] meaning: “Verily we belong to Allah and truly to Him shall we return. O Allah! Protect me in this calamity that has befallen me and replace it with something better.”
Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace (Q33:56).
O Allah, guide us with those whom You have guided, grant us well-being among those You have granted well-being, be an ally to us along with those whom You are an ally to, and bless what You have bestowed upon us, and save us from the evil of what You have decreed. For verily You decree and none can decree over You. He whom You support can never be humiliated. Glory is to You, our Lord, You are Blessed and Exalted.
O Allah, I ask You for well-being in this world and the Hereafter. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religion, my worldly affairs, my family and my property. O Allah, conceal my faults and keep me safe from what I fear. O Allah, guard me from in front of me and behind me, on my right and on my left, and from above me. And I seek refuge in Your Magnificence from being swallowed up from beneath me.
Servants of Allah. Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
Remember Allah, the Great – He will remember you. Thank Him for His favours – He will increase you therein. And seek forgiveness from Him – He will forgive you. And be conscious of Him – He will provide you a way out of difficult matters
