Fatherhood in Islam is viewed as a significant responsibility and a position of honor. Fathers are entrusted with the duty of providing for the family, guiding their children in matters of faith, and setting an example of piety and morality. The Qur’an offers guidance on the role of parents, especially fathers, emphasizing their responsibility in raising righteous children.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF FATHERHOOD IN ISLAM:
1. SPIRITUAL AND MORAL GUIDANCE
Fathers are responsible for instilling Islamic values in their children. They are expected to teach their children about Allah, prayer, and righteous behavior.
Surah Tahrim (66:6):
“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones…”
This verse highlights the importance of guiding one’s family toward righteousness and safeguarding them from the consequences of sin.
2. PROVIDING FOR THE FAMILY
A father is responsible for the well-being of his family, including their financial and emotional needs.
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:233):
“Upon the father is the mothers’ provision and their clothing according to what is acceptable…”
This verse underscores the duty of a father to provide for his children and their mother, reflecting his role as the primary caregiver and protector.
3. NURTURING LOVE AND COMPASSION
Fathers are encouraged to show love and compassion toward their children, creating an environment where they feel valued and secure.
Surah Luqman (31:13-19):
In these verses, Luqman advises his son with wisdom, warning him against shirk (associating others with Allah), encouraging prayer, patience, humility, and kindness. This is a clear example of a father’s duty to nurture moral and ethical values in his children.
4. SETTING A GOOD EXAMPLE
Fathers are expected to lead by example, demonstrating good character and devotion to Allah.
Surah Al-Furqan (25:74):
“Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.”
This supplication shows the importance of being role models for one’s family, encouraging righteousness through actions.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the importance of treating children with kindness and fairness:
He said, “The best of you is the one who is best to his family.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi)
The Prophet also showed love and affection to his children and grandchildren, setting an example for fathers to be compassionate and caring.
In summary, fatherhood in Islam is about more than just providing materially; it is about guiding children toward the path of righteousness, showing them love and care, and being a role model of piety and good character.
